Nanocomposites for environmental remediation
    DEP demonstrative experimental project
    Contract no Mbr. 467 DEP/2020

Nowadays, there are many concerns regarding the high degree of contaminated sites around the world. Occurrence of arsenic in groundwater and drinking water in concentrations that exceed the tolerance limit (0.01mg L−1) is a global problem, and poses an ever-increasing degree of health hazard.

    Project objectives

The project is focused on developing new cetyltrimethylammonium bromide coated iron oxide nanoparticles (FexOy-CTAB) for arsenic removal from waters. Another goal of this project is to assess the toxicity of arsenic towards animal vital organs using in vivo studies. In this context, the first objective of this project will be the synthesis of FexOy-CTAB powders by an adapted coprecipiattion method. Secondly, the physico-chemical characterization of FexOy-CTAB powders will be performed using adequate techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM and EDS), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. The porosity of the material will also be evaluated using BET method. Another important objective of this project will be the assessment of arsenic toxicity on using in vivo experiments. For this purpose, laboratory in vivo studies regarding the toxicity of arsenic on vital organs of rats will be performed. In vivo studies will aslso be performed on rats exposed to decontamined water. A group of rats will be administered arsenic contaminated water previously decontaminated using FexOy-CTAB nanoparticles.
